Mt. Pleasant Guide |
Mt. Pleasant is just across the spectacular Ravenel Bridge from historic Charleston, South Carolina. Sandwiched between two of America’s favorite tourist destinations – Charleston and the Isle of Palms/Sullivan’s Island -- Mt Pleasant offers many attractions of its own.

| Patriot’s Point |
| |
Patriot’s Point is easily one of Charleston’s most popular tourist attractions and the crown jewel of Mt. Pleasant. How often do you get to wander around an aircraft carrier like the USS Yorktown? For navy buffs, Patriot’s Point allows free roaming, self guided tours of:
USS Yorktown (CV-10), an aircraft carrier
USCGC Ingham (WHEC-35), a Coast Guard cutter
USS Laffey (DD-724), a destroyer
USS Clamagore (SS-343), a submarine
|
 |
| |
Inside the Yorktown is the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum, a mock up of the Apollo 8 spacecraft that was pulled from the ocean by aircraft carrier. On the flight deck is a collection of 25 different airplanes and helicopters including: an A-4 Skyhawk, an A-6 Intruder, an A-7 Corsair, an F-4 Phantom, an F-9 Cougar, and an F-14 Tomcat – the kind Tom Cruise flew in “Top Gun” Note: it can be quite windy on the flight deck and it may feel 10 degrees colder than the Mt. Pleasant shoreline. Dress accordingly.
The Yorktown is a full day and be sure to wear your walking shoes. There is a lot to see; narrow steps and tight quarters. The snack bar has a pretty nice hot dog.
If that not enough history for you, from Patriot’s Point in Mt. Pleasant you can also take a boat tour of Ft. Sumter – the place the American Civil War began.
Patriot’s Point also features an 18 hole professional golf course and some nice accommodations. Plus it is only a few minutes from Shem Creek and some of the best seafood restaurants not only in Mt. Pleasant but in the entire country.

| Shem Creek |
| |
Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant is a wonderful place to eat. There is fresh shrimp and other local fish that go right off the boat and straight to your table. The view from this Mt. Pleasant landmark is a sight worth seeing. Located on the Charleston Harbor, it is directly across from the Charleston Historical District and the “Battery”. From many tables you can also see the USS Yorktown, the Ravenel Bridge and even Fort Sumter

 |
| |
| There are a variety of fine floating seafood restaurants with menu items such as the Charleston signature dish, She-Crab soup. If you’re staying in a place with a kitchen, Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant also offers several places to buy fresh seafood. |

| Boone Hall Plantation |
| |
| For fans of the antebellum South, there is Boone Hall Plantation. It is worth an hour or two of your time to see this restored plantation. The highlight is the nearly ¾ of a mile of Live Oaks that lines the road to the main house. Often overshadow by its more famous cousins in West Ashley, Middleton Place Plantation, Magnolia Plantation and Drayton Hall, Boone Hall is a nice half day tour. |

 |
| |
| If you’re staying in Charleston or West Ashley it is only about 15 minutes from the Historic District and the drive across the Ravenel Bridge is breathtaking. |

(WARNING: For some reason most every major webpage for a site in Mt. Pleasant is annoying and too clever by half. Flash videos, slow to load, hard to navigate, etc. This is particularly true of the Patriot’s Point webpage and the Boone Hall Plantation webpage. This in no way diminishes the quality of these attractions.) |
